As Director of Scripture Union Ireland, I have the privilege of being able to meet with lots of different leaders, volunteers, parents, and young people from a variety of churches, backgrounds, and communities across Ireland.
These interactions do two things for me: they encourage me as I look at the work of Scripture Union, while also spurring me on and inspiring me in my own faith.
This month, I wanted to share three brief encouragements with you:
1. God is bigger than we can imagine
Through all of my interactions across Scripture Union - and no doubt this has been the experience of many of you - I continually see that God works through people and in environments I might never have thought possible or imagined. It's awfully humbling to realise that we aren’t all-knowing.
Over the last number of months, as I’ve spent time reading through the Psalms, they’ve given me a fresh lens for both my own faith and our work here. All throughout the Psalms, we are reminded of a God whose greatness and goodness overflow into all corners of the earth, revealing Himself through all sorts of different people, places, and circumstances. This is the reality and the joy in our day-to-day ministry, whether at Ovoca Manor or alongside local churches and schools. God’s Spirit is not limited by our own expectations, beliefs, or past experiences - and every now and then, we get the privilege of catching a glimpse of His love in action and being a part of it.
2. It takes a village
One of the most wonderful parts of Scripture Union's work in Ireland is the impact it has had on generations of families throughout its history. Hearing stories about great-grandparents who came to camps with grandparents and parents, and now seeing those children show up at our existing events - it is an incredible legacy. It’s built through consistency and the passing on of faith over many years through many families. Many young people who attended our camps are now serving as volunteers and giving back in countless ways. It is in the breadth of the community that faith is ultimately seen and shared.
It is exciting to think of the individuals, families, and communities who will be shaped by the ongoing work here - and through the service, hard work, and prayers of each of you. We each have a role to play in sharing the hope and good news found throughout Scripture.
3. We are one piece of a larger jigsaw
Throughout the year, we run numerous camps and events, gather people together, produce resources, and partner with schools and churches. Yet, as vital as this work is, it is clear that we are just one piece of a much larger story.
The fun of the adventure is being able to piece the jigsaw together with each of you:
Parents trying to connect with their children while dealing with teenage eye-rolls or toddler tantrums.
Youth workers who consistently show up week after week for young people, even when it feels like nobody is listening.
Teachers who are trying to extend an extra bit of grace for students who are struggling to concentrate.
Church leaders who quietly sacrifice to serve their local communities day in and day out.
Individuals who continue to pray for people you know, and for many you have never met.
We are grateful to share in this adventure alongside you.
Please pray for us whenever you can:
For our summer camps that are currently ongoing and for the young people and families who will attend them - that they would experience God's goodness.
For our volunteers, staff, and board - that they will know God's nearness.
For the people who know nothing about Scripture Union - that we would be able to help reach them with the good news of Jesus.
